Rochester (1647-80) was described as "one of the greatest sinners of a sinful age, also one of the finest and most daringly speculative minds of the age of reason."
Despite Rochester's reputation as a great wit, there is one occasion when someone else got the better of him: his famous encounter with Isaac Barrow.
Barrow: My Lord, I am yours to the ground.
Rochester: Doctor, I am yours to the centre.
Barrow: My Lord, I am yours to the antipodes.
Rochester: Doctor, I am yours to the lowest pit of hell!
Barrow: There, my Lord, I leave you.
